was talking to Joyce frm drama class yesterday going back into the West from civilisation
and we got on the topic of celebrities and charity
her take on it was that some of them do it because it fills their life with purpose and makes them feel good rather than really sincerely wanting to help make the world the better place
i thought about it for awhile and this theory applies to a lot of things actually
like being in a relationship not for love but for companionship
then i thought does it matter? that that's how it plays out for some people? maybe it undermines the whole concept of love. but it's a choice isn't it? alas, tis sad nonetheless but everyone's entitled to their choices in life. we just hope for the best :)

Just call me mainstream girl
You know, i never really understood the argument of 'Selling-Out'. I know, bands go mainstream, they become part of pop culture and their fans from before suddenly start pointing fingers goin "Blasphemy!" But why? Sure they appear on magazine covers, sure they may be called to endorse products or campaigns, but does it always have to be the case? If you think about it from another angle, can't it be that these bands are simply sharing their good music with a wider audience? I don't know, I've always felt that good things should be shared with the world. Or maybe that's just the typical Asian collectivist side of me talking hehe. And sometimes, are they really 'Selling-Out'. For some bands that go mainstream, I personally see no difference before and after, but yet their former fans can insist that "Their music is pandering towards the masses now! It's not true, I'm not gonna listen to it anymore!"
Undeniably, this is true for some bands or artistes who truly pander towards commercialisation after getting on the mainstream bandwagon. But for some of these fans, can it be that they're just being a tad oversensitive, that maybe their disdain for the bands they used to like stems from the fact that everyone knows them now and these former fans are no longer 'special'? haha kinda like an infringment on individuality.
this relates to what im supposed to be studying now actually. that some people see the evolution of the internet to that of pop culture to be infringing on its use as a tool for democracy, and voicing of minority views etc. but i don't. why can't the internet serve multiple purposes? those who wish to use it in a more popular fashion can do so and those who want to use it as an alternative form of media can do so too. i mean after all, that's the freedom of choice right?
Note: Ehh i respect everyone's opinion ah. So don't flame me. hehe im just giving my take on things ^-^

Catharsis
-noun, plural1.
the purging of the emotions or relieving of emotional tensions, esp. through certain kinds of art, as tragedy or music.
the reason why we listen to sad songs and watch melodramas even though we know the effect they have on us. i cite it too often. but sometimes you go through life in a surreal fashion. like the world is just a whirl of colours and you cant find any sense of grounding. the world in its entirety is so impermanent. sometimes it feels as though in a moment everything will disappear. i think that's what i fear. therefore though seemingly masochistic, catharsis is needed to remind the individual that he or she is a functioning, living, breathing human being existing in a reality. to quote the Goo Goo Dolls, "You bleed just to know you're alive." Sad but true. Of course, with catharsis, you don't have to take things to such an extreme. But it's along a similar thread. The need to feel.
Empathy
-noun1.
the intellectual identification with or vicarious experiencing of the feelings, thoughts, or attitudes of another.
why are we able to go through catharsis? with this little tool. empathy. you become overwhelmed with the emotion the character or song is sending and you get wrapped up it. maybe what they say is true. melodramas may be bad for health. but i think we can't help it. we just enjoy being taken on the rollercoaster ride of emotions. to feel.

chivalry is never old
feminism is never new
but i affirm sarah's idea
that feminism does not have to mean going against conventions of what being female means
outwit, outplay, outlast (haha sorry i quote survivor) that's what i feel the new feminist is about
she knows what she wants and she goes out to get it
whether she subscribes to or breaks gender roles is another issue
but she is driven and determined.
haha im no die hard feminist myself but i believe strongly in the empowerment of women. SOME gender stereotypes on the other hand i can accept to a certain extent (like the association of girls with pink) AS LONG AS the world can recognise that these qualities are not so for everyone and that girls can be as good if not better than boys in things.
that's why i've always loved cartoons with female protagonists.
they make lil girls believe that they can be heroes too!
and if you think fairy tale princesses only perpetuate the concept of a dainty lady, think again.
all the princesses eventually get what they want don't they?
a happily ever after.
so what if they may have been passive in getting it.
they get it in the end ^-^

haha complaints
everyone has them (more or less anyway, i do know of people who are truly amenable to most situations)
but most people dont act of them.
why?
well, unless really unbearable, most people try to work around and/or accomodate the situation.
for example, regarding the shuttle bus and the SBS services. the majority of us, me included, talk about how the buses are always packed etc and the frequency sucks but in the end most people just shake it off as being part of life. i know i do. the proverbial optimist :)
haha that's why i really applaude people who are willing to make a difference by simply voicing out their concerns. it takes so little time yet its effects can be quite far-reaching.

Why
Can't
The World
Just
Get Along.
WHYYYY
I wanted to say "Why aren't people doing what's right?"
Then I realised everybody has a different opinion on what is right.
Accomodation would then be the key.
But there are certain things that you really can't accomodate on can you?
Oh wait then again different people have different levels of acceptance as it is so to you something may be considered atrocious but others may think it's fine.
sigh. just wish that this whole concept of World Peace would descend on earth like a blanket. and soon please.

sometimes i wonder
whether i should b less concerned
but how do i do so when doing so is so inherently in me :(
i know! just smile!
keep an open mind, and if then it fails realise that if it makes people happy, you should be happy too! simply because, that's life :)
to quote michael jackson
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough
For the living
Make a better place
For you and for me
i think we should all strive to do so one step at a time. even if one day you feel as though the world has turned it's back on you (which is never really the case) just love it with all your heart cuz i think that's what it should be. unconditional. ^-^
