Was reading The Straits Times today and came across responses made with regards to an article written last week about the possibility of Singapore having our own very success story ala YouTube. Sad to say i agree with the responses that most of us here are risk-adverse. Sure we have our Sim Wong Hoos but i think if given the choice, the majority of would pick an executive job paying perhaps somewhere on the lower end of the 5-figure range as opposed to striking out and making millions but also facing the possibility of bankruptcy. Face it, most of us can't stand failure. But i guess that's natural though. It's something that has been instilled in us since we were young.
I think it boils down to one word: society
as kass puts it (as much as i disdain the fact) we are perceived to be what we are by other people. Sure you can be very sure of yourself and disregard other people's opinion whether good or bad but the cliche 'no man is an island' holds. unless of course you find a miraculous way to survive entirely without any one else and exist as a self-sufficient entity of one. Therefore we all fear failure, cuz sometimes that means rejection by society or at least it would seem very much as such.
Sometimes i hear a distinct voice at the back of my head telling me to take risks, seize the day, take the path less travelled. And sometimes i REALLY want to listen to it. But i stop myself, cuz the truth is im as kiasi as the next person. Maybe someday in the distant future i will start listening to it. But not now. Now i have my 'A' levels in 9days.
And therefore i add another unit to the vast pool of those who form the reason why it's hard for Singapore to have our very own YouTube-story ^-^
C'est la vie
