Pt V(a) of Behind 2 Pairs of EyesJane"I hope the food is to your liking." Jane said as she looked down at her plate.
She looked surprisingly stunning in her austere red dress. There was absolutely no semblance of the nondescript character she was in school. Jane had just realised that her guest was the most sought after guy in school but personally, she didn’t think much of his looks. His grades however, were another issue. She marvelled at how he has managed to maintain almost As throughout his entire student life, despite being active in extra curricular activities and an active social life. She on the other hand, though not lacking in brains, was somewhat more inconsistent with fluctuating grades and to add to the fact, she had few friends and very much preferred to whole herself up at home.
Dinner was very much a silent affair. Jane just ate her share of food, and secretly observed how her guest behaved. To her, he seemed so different from the boy she encountered. He was so proper in everything he did, as if he were one of the boys at the country club. But she knew he wasn't. Not that he wasn't proper, just that he wasn't one of them. He was different, but she couldn’t quite pin down the reason why.
"Do you have such a habit?”" Jane’s guest asked in a perplexed tone.
"What?"
"Of noticing how people eat."
Jane blushed the shade of her dress. She opened her mouth to try and say something but words just didn't come out.
"Haha, relax, I'm just kidding. "Her guest chuckled, realising the mistake of his wise crack and tried to make amends.
After that comment, Jane just kept to herself and the food in front of her. She knew he was kidding, but she couldn't help feel bad. She had always hopeless in social situations and always will be. Why couldn't she be more like her mother? Why couldn't she be more like him? Couldn't she have said something like "Well because the food looks good" or "I’m merely observing the aesthetic quality of dining"? Anybody but herself would be better.
"I'm really sorry if I made you feel embarrassed or anything. I didn't mean too. I shouldn't have. After all, you are my host."
Jane thought for a moment. Then she looked up at him, managed a smile and replied "I guess we should get down to talking about the watch now."
